What is Composite Bonding?
Composite bonding is a type of cosmetic treatment that can be used to improve the overall aesthetics of your teeth. Its an ideal treatment for those slight imperfections, to really boost your self confidence.
Why Would I Need Composite Bonding?
There are a number of complaints that can affect the overall look of our smile. Typically composite bonding is used for:
- Chipped teeth
- Gappy smiles (small gaps possible to be closed without the need for braces)
- Stained teeth/fillings
- Perfecting the edges of our teeth (embrasures)
This is a particularly minimally invasive cosmetic treatment, and is often the preferred solution for minimal improvements before considering veneers (or full smile make overs).
Benefits of Composite Bonding
The main benefit is the immediate improvement to the teeth aesthetically. The composite material used is the same found in white fillings. The dentist will use the material to change the looks of your teeth (in line with your goals) and also repair any chips or blemishes to perfect those imperfections.
Your teeth can be built up to close any smalls gap you may have (more severe case may require braces). The lengths and shapes of the teeth can also be adjusted using this technique.
Other Suitable Options
When it comes to enhancing your teeth cosmetically, there are now many different options that can be used to reach that goal:
Veneers are effectively like false finger nails but for your teeth. They can either be made out of a composite or porcelain material. They are fabricated to meet your goals (which are initially discussed with your dentist). Your teeth do need to be prepared for the veneers (shaved down slightly), and are then bonded to the surfaces of your teeth for instant cosmetic improvement. Your dentist will always discuss in detail what exactly each option entails. It is worth noting that the preparation part of this stage is more invasive then composite bonding and does require healthy tooth structure to be removed (porcelain veneers can be made thinner due to their strength and requires less prep work).
Teeth whitening is a fairly common and easy way to give your smile a lift. Using safe & approved whitening techniques, we can change the shade of your teeth which can help enhance your confidence.
Invisalign: Depending on your teeth, composite bonding may not be the most suitable option if the gaps are too large, or if your teeth are crooked. Using Invisalign clear aligners, your teeth can be gradually re-positioned into a straight position.
Composite bonding can often be used at the end of a treatment to treat those slight imperfections or blemishes to really complete your smile.
How Is Composite Bonding Achieved?
The first step is for a dentist to assess your teeth and ensure you have achieved dental health. For any cosmetic treatment, this is always the first step.
Composite bonding can often be completed in one appointment. Using the composite material, the dentist will apply it to the treatment area, and once they are happy they will use a UV light to harden the material. Once hardened, they will further shape and trim the material to give you the look that you want. They will then finish up with a polish so it matches the sheen of the surrounding natural tooth.
